Social stratification and development in the Mediterranean Basin
Stratification sociale et developpement dans le Bassin mediterranéen
This work explores social stratification and its evolution in Mediterranean countries, divided into three sections. The first section examines structural changes, addressing topics such as social stratification in Morocco, the industrial and agricultural proletariat in the United Arab Republic, and Lebanon's shifting class structure. It also discusses the local economic frameworks in Tunisia and the emergence of a sub-proletariat in developing economies, with specific insights from Greece and Naples, focusing on social crystallization and its effects on population behavior. The second section delves into social mobility trends, highlighting the limits of social mobility in Spain during the 1960s, the effects of rural exodus on urban occupational patterns in Ankara, and the rise of a middle class in Jordan. It further investigates the integration and mobilization of elites in Tunisia and labor commitment in a Turkish context, alongside the relationship between industrialization and social change through Italian case studies. The final section addresses control power, exploring the relationship between the administrative elite and peasantry in Tunisia, the evolution of Greece's political elite, and bureaucratic attitudes in Italy's changing society. It also covers local political frameworks in Tunisia and the authority of industrial cadres, concluding with an analysis of educational performance and teaching staff in Tunisia.
