En la primera parte del libro se repasan los principales géneros históricos practicados por los historiadores medievales: los anales, las genealogías, las autobiografías y las crónicas. En la segunda parte se realiza un sugerente paralelismo entre los problemas teóricos y epistemológicos que se presentan tanto a los cronistas medievales como a los historiadores contemporáneos. El libro se completa con dos capítulos dedicados al análisis de las últimas tendencias de la interpretación de los textos históricos (como el nuevo medievalismo, la nueva filología, el nuevo historicismo o el postmodernismo) que, al fin y al cabo, son las nuevas tendencias de la historiografía globalmente considerada.
