This is the third volume in Lucy Norton's three-volume abridgement and translation of the the memoirs of the Duc de Saint-Simon, first published in the 1960s. It starts with the funeral of Louis XIV, and includes espionage and intrigues concerning the Stuart pretender to the English throne.

Louis de Rouvroy, duc de Saint-Simon, fut l'un des favoris de la cour de Louis XIV, logeant à Versailles où il observa les intrigues de palais pendant plus de trente ans. En tant qu'historiographe du roi et de la cour, il rédigea des Mémoires colossales, une fresque historiographique plutôt qu'une autobiographie. Saint-Simon avertit ses lecteurs que son œuvre ne traite pas de lui-même, mais d'une "histoire particulière" de son époque et de son pays. Bien que rédigés à la première personne, ses écrits adoptent une perspective discrète, semblable à celle d'une caméra cachée, permettant d'assister en tant que spectateur aux intrigues des courtisans et aux scènes vivantes de la cour. Après la mort du Grand Dauphin en 1712, il se plaît à "croquer" les courtisans, qui réfléchissent davantage sur eux-mêmes que sur l'événement inattendu.
