The beginning was easy. Going back in time, bathing as one might have a thousand years ago, creating a building set into the slope with an architectural attitude older than anything built around it, inventing a structure that could always have existed, one that relates to the topography and geology of the location, responding to the stone masses of Vals Valley—these were the objectives of our design. Peter Zumthor, born in 1943, studied at the College of Applied Arts in Basel and the Pratt Institute in New York. He was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2009 for his life’s work, including the Kunsthaus Bregenz and Kolumba Art Museum. His Therme Vals, a spa complex built into a Swiss Alp mountainside, became an icon of contemporary architecture after its 1996 opening. This book-length study features Zumthor’s original sketches and plans, alongside Hélène Binet’s striking photographs. Annotations by Zumthor highlight Therme Vals’s relationship with its natural surroundings, while an essay by architectural scholar Sigrid Hauser explores connections between the spa’s elemental nature and themes of mythology, bathing, and purity. This lavishly illustrated volume will captivate enthusiasts of contemporary design.

Es gibt immer mehr Lichtquellen auf der Erde, damit immer mehr Licht und immer weniger Schattenzonen und Dunkelheit. In der Architektur wächst die Transparenz der neuen Gebäude und ihrer Organisation. Der vermehrte Einsatz von Glas und anderen transluzenten Schichten wirft in der Folge von mehr Licht auch die Frage nach der Bedeutung des Schattens auf. Sind Schatten ein Gewinn - ein Schutz oder der Verlust von Helligkeit. Wie erklären sich architektonische Schatten in einer historischen Perspektive? Wie ist ihre Bedeutung in der Architektur bestimmt worden? Warum brauchen wir Schatten? Dieser Frage versucht das Buch, das eine Ausstellung im Deutschen Architektur Museum zum Thema begleitete, von unterschiedlichen Standpunkten und Vorstellungen aus nachzugehen.

As one of the most important cultural centers in the country, the building houses a variety of institutions under one roof. With the design, the renowned architect won the architecture competition in 2007. Inside its surface of fiberglass-reinforced concrete the building contains an auditorium that seats over a thousand, a conference center, a museum, and a library. Its open, inviting, and curvilinear design, which pics up and expands on forms from the surrounding environment, strongly differentiates the building from the city's monumental architecture of the Soviet era. Photographs by Helene Binet and Iwan Baan display the building in all of its facets, making it possible for the reader to experience its formal, haptic, and spatial qualities. Essays explain conceptual and technical aspects of this impressive piece of architecture.
