Johannes Fried konfrontiert die Ergebnisse der modernen Gedächtnis- und Hirnforschung mit Beispielen aus der Geschichte, um den Schleier der Erinnerung zu lüften. Diese Erinnerung senkt sich über alles, was war, und verklärt, verformt und verdrängt. Die moderne Geschichtswissenschaft hat bisher wenig untersucht, wie weit die verformende Kraft des Gedächtnisses reicht, obwohl die meisten historischen Quellen auf Gedächtnisleistungen basieren. Die Unzuverlässigkeit des menschlichen episodischen Gedächtnisses zeigt sich in der fehlerhaften Erinnerung an Sachdaten, Orte, Zeiten und Beteiligte eines Geschehens. Diese Unzuverlässigkeit erfordert neue methodische Überlegungen für die historische Quellenkritik. Fried erläutert die Ergebnisse moderner Kognitionswissenschaften und verknüpft sie mit Beispielen aus der modernen und mittelalterlichen Geschichte. Sein Ergebnis: Vergangenheit wird in der Gegenwart neu geschaffen, unbewusst konstruiert aus verschiedenen Elementen erinnerter Geschehnisse. Scheinbar stimmige Vergangenheitsbilder können erheblich vom tatsächlich Geschehenen abweichen. Jede Erinnerung und Quelle muss daher im Kontext ihrer Gegenwart beurteilt werden, was zu neuen Regeln im Umgang mit Geschichte führt. Was verdeckt also der Schlei
