Ambiciózní mladík Arvid Stjärnblom se zamiluje do Lydie, dcery krajináře Stilleho. Nechce se ale vázat a není ani jediným Lydiiným nápadníkem. Po letech, kdy už jsou oba spoutáni konvenčním manželstvím, se pokusí navázat na svou někdejší lásku a osvobodit se od společenských pout. Ale zatímco Lydia odejde od rodiny, Arvid k takovému činu jen těžko hledá sílu. Časem si také uvědomí, že Lydiina potřeba lásky je větší, než tušil, a že totéž platí i pro její erotickou touhu. Román je prostoupen lyrikou, ale také kousavou ironií a pohledem na život, který je zbaven všech iluzí a pochybuje o možnosti dosažení skutečné lásky. Ve Švédsku patří k nejoblíbenějším klasickým prózám a byl celkem třikrát (1945, 1977 a 2016) zfilmován.
