Marc Chagall (1887-1985) scrisse "La mia vita" in lingua russa tra il 1921 e il 1922, poco prima di lasciare definitivamente Mosca dopo l'esperienza esaltante e dolorosa della Rivoluzione, e nello stesso periodo compose i disegni che accompagnano il testo. L'opera, tradotta in francese dalla moglie, Bella Chagall, apparve a Parigi nel 1931, presso la Librairie Stock con il titolo di "Ma vie", e venne ristampata nel 1957 con lievi modifiche e integrazioni dell'artista.
