Gemeinsam mit Edna Adelson, Vivian Shapiro und anderen gründete die Psychoanalytikerin Selma Fraiberg 1972 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, das »Child Development Project«. Hier erarbeiteten Fachleute aus Kinderanalyse, Psychologie, Psychiatrie, Sozialarbeit und Säuglingspflege in einer ambulanten Klinik zusammen eine psychoanalytisch fundierte klinische Interventionsmethode, um Babys, deren körperliche und/oder seelische Entwicklung gefährdet war, und ihren häufig minderjährigen, traumatisierten und in Armut lebenden Müttern zu helfen.
