John Julius Norwich (scomparso nel giugno del 2018) oltre che storico era stato un documentarista ed un reporter di viaggi. Il suo modo di scrivere storia aveva quindi come scopo indispensabile anche una forma di intrattenimento, quello di avvincere il lettore in resoconti del passato «interessanti e piacevoli da leggere» e mirati alla ricerca di un «senso». Per cui, questa breve storia non è soltanto una sintesi documentata o un incuriosito viaggio dai Fenici e dai Greci agli anni di mezzo del Novecento in terra di Sicilia.
