Analýzou chápání termínu ve třech zemích – ve Spojených státech amerických (USA), Evropské unii (EU) a Japonsku – vycházejících z rozdílných historických a kulturních tradic identifikuje v konkrétních případových studiích (válka s terorismem, Kjótský protokol) různé interpretace konceptu multilateralismu a ty následně zpětně posuzuje ve světle teoretických přístupů.
