In her dangerous encounter with the bear, however, Martin encounters another kind of being altogether, setting off a series of subsequent disasters. She is left severely mutilated and undergoes multiple operations in a provincial Russian hospital, whose ghastly chief surgeon sports a mouthful of gold teeth and presides over a harem of young nurses. Back in France, she goes under the knife again, supposedly to fix the work done in Russia, but the results are even more problematic. She comes to the conclusion that she must return to Kamchatka. She must discover what it means to have become, as the Evens call it, a miedka, a person who is not only human but beast. Viděla jsem příliš jiný svět šelmy i příliš lidský svět nemocnic. Ztratila jsem své místo, hledám meziprostor. Prostředí, kde bych se zotavila. Vše začíná, když na francouzskou antropoložku Nastassju Martin (1986) zaútočí na Kamčatce uprostřed zamrzlé sopečné krajiny medvěd, a zanechá ji se zraněným obličejem napospas ruským a francouzským nemocnicím, samotnou na cestě za uzdravením narušeného těla v od nynějška hluboce otřeseném světě. Specialistka na animismus arktických populací tak zažívá na vlastním těle to, co dosud zkoumala: zborcení hranic mezi člověkem a zvířetem, hroucení bezpečných limitů, do nichž se uzavíráme, a nutnost čelit bezprostřední divokosti a proměně. V tomto strhujícím autobiografickém vyprávění, čerpajícím z antropologie i šamanismu, s námi sdílí svou cestu do neznáma. Nastassja Martin je také autorkou studie Les âmes sauvages. Face à l’Occident, la résistance d’un peuple d’Alaska (Divoké duše. Rezistence aljašského lidu tváří v tvář Západu, 2016), a podílela se na vzniku několika dokumentárních filmů o kamčatských Evenech. Věřit v šelmy je její první román. Francouzské vydání (2019) se již dočkalo mnoha dotisků, bylo oceněno cenami François Sommer a Mac Orlan a přeloženo do několika jazyků.

Nach ihrer sehr persönlichen Erzählung An das Wilde glauben führt auch Nastassja Martins neues Buch wieder nach Kamtschatka, wo die Lesenden auf alte Bekannte stoßen: die Even. Doch in Im Osten der Träume reflektiert die Anthropologin nun die ganze Geschichte ihrer Zeit mit den Even. Nach ihrer Feldforschung bei den Gwich'in in Alaska erscheint es Martin notwendig, sich auf die andere Seite der Beringstraße und des ehemaligen Eisernen Vorhangs zu begeben. In Kamtschatka lernt sie ein Even-Kollektiv kennen, das in der Sowjetunion gezwungen war, in Kolchosen sesshaft zu werden, und nach dem Zusammenbruch des Regimes beschloss, in den Wald zurückzukehren, um eine autonome Lebensweise neu zu erfinden. Diese beruht auf Fischfang, Jagd und Sammeln: ganz untypisch für die Even, die ursprünglich kleinere Rentierherden hüteten. Nastassja Martin begleitet sie und beschreibt, wie das Kollektiv den Dialog mit den Tieren und den Elementen wieder aufnimmt, wobei Träume eine essenzielle Rolle spielen. Mit ihrem neuen Alltag reagiert diese Gruppe auf die jahrzehntelangen Verheerungen, die eine koloniale Machtpolitik ihr zugefügt hat. Und zugleich versucht sie, eine Antwort auf die Herausforderungen der Gegenwart zu finden, während in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft die Zeitbombe einer bevorstehenden Naturkatastrophe in Gestalt eines zügellosen Nickel-Extraktivismus längst zu ticken begonnen hat.
