Memory has become a major preoccupation in the humanities in recent decades, be it individual and collective memory, cultural and national memory, or traumatic memory and the ethics of its representation. More recently, concepts such as “transcultural memory,” “connective memory,” and “multidirectional memory” have been developed in order to think about the ways in which memory is now structured by the global and digital circulation of events across time and space, as well as across social, geographical, and political borders. Additionally, political upheavals around the world have been accompanied by questions about who or what should be memorialized, and who or what cannot be or is not represented. The evidentiary status of recollection, reproduction, and recording has been interrogated within quests to exert power or call for justice.Drawing on these complex concerns, Astrid Schmetterling and Lynn Turner focus on distinct films—a series of short meditations on the September 11, 2001, attacks commissioned by Alain Brigand and collectively titled 11'09”01 – September 11 (2002), and Richard Linklater's Tape (2001). »Draw what you see«, was my father´s response, when I managed to smuggle to the men´s barracks the drawings of children building a snowman. This was in December of 1941, shortly after we arrived in Theresienstadt. That snowman was actually my last genuine drawing as a child. Through this sentence of my father´s, and through my own inner motivation, I felt called from now on to capture in my drawings the everyday life of the ghetto. The impressions that from this point in time would affect me, ended my childhood.

Charlotte Salomon - 1917 in Berlin geboren, 1939 nach Südfrankreich emigriert, 1943 in Auschwitz ermordet - hat ein außergewöhnliches Werk hinterlassen: Leben? oder Theater? Kunst und Literatur, Film und Musik sind in diesem 1940 bis 1942 im französischen Exil entstandenen Zyklus spielerisch miteinander verwoben. In Bildern und Texten von eigenwilliger Kraft setzt Charlotte Salomon die Lebensgeschichte einer jungen Frau im Berlin der zwanziger und dreißiger Jahre in Szene, die nach der Pogromnacht ins Exil geht. Sie erzählt von der zunehmenden Verfolgung der Juden, von Liebes- und Familienbeziehungen, die alles andere als einfach sind, unsentimental, selbstironisch oft noch da, wo es eigentlich bodenlos wird.Astrid Schmetterling stellt Leben und Werk der Künstlerin vor. Sie zeigt, wie Charlotte Salomon in ihrer kühnen Vermischung unterschiedlicher Genres eine visuelle Sprache fand, mit der sie ihrem Leben zwischen verschiedenen Identitäten und Orten, als jüdische Frau im Exil, auf einzigartige Weise Ausdruck zu verleihen vermochte. Dem Essay sind 16 Farbabbildungen aus dem Zyklus Leben? oder Theater? vorausgestellt.
