Bricks and Mortar is the story of the sex trade in a big city in the former GDR, from just before 1989 to the present day, charting the development of the industry from absolute prohibition to full legality in the twenty years following the reunification of Germany. The focus is on the rise and fall of one man from football hooligan to large-scale landlord and service- provider for prostitutes to, ultimately, a man persecuted by those he once trusted. But we also hear other voices: many different women who work in prostitution, their clients, small-time gangsters, an ex-jockey searching for his drug-addict daughter, a businessman from the West, a girl forced into child prostitution, a detective, a pirate radio presenter... In his most ambitious book to date, Clemens Meyer pays homage to modernist, East German and contemporary writers like Alfred Döblin, Wolfgang Hilbig and David Peace but uses his own style and almost hallucinatory techniques. Time shifts and stretches, people die and come to life again, and Meyer takes his characters seriously and challenges his readers in this dizzying eye-opening novel that also finds inspiration in the films of Russ Meyer, Takashi Miike, Gaspar Noé and David Lynch.

Und wie wurde in den Jahren nach dem Mauerfall eine ganze Epoche der deutschen Literatur von Kritikern abgeräumt und dann von Publikum und Lesern beinahe vergessen? Eine Suche nach Antworten. Und ein eindringliches Bekenntnis zu einer großen Schriftstellerin.

Kniha povídek Z mlhy života obsahuje jedenáct překladů povídek Clemense Meyera a Clemense J. Setze. Oba prozaikové reprezentují současnou německou a rakouskou literární tvorbu a jsou díky neotřelému pohledu na skutečnost označováni za kontroverzní. Společným jmenovatelem hlavních postav povídek je intenzivní vnímání vlastního já a jeho konfrontace s vnějším světem. Povídky tematicky odrážejí současný stav mezilidských vztahů, společnosti a tápání jedince ve vnitřním i vnějším světě. Hrdinové povídek jsou vykresleni jako věční a neúnavní hledači, jejichž konfrontace dospívají do neočekávaných a originálních situací se surrealistickým nádechem. V okamžicích osobních krizí jako by se snažili vykročit z mlhy života do opravdového žití. Výsledkem jejich odhodlání jsou však díky tlakům zvnějšku i vlastní slabosti většinou jen jakási polovičatá řešení.

Die Literaturredakteurin des Saarländischen Rundfunks Tilla Fuchs bittet namhafte AutorInnen um eine Rede an die AbiturientInnen. Sie setzt damit die von Ralf Schock im Jahr 1999 begonnene Reihe fort. Mit Unterstützung des Senders, des Kultusministeriums und der Union Stiftung konnten in der Vergangenheit u. a. Martin Mosebach, Jenny Erpenbeck, Juli Zeh, Raoul Schrott und Büchner-Preisträger Jan Wagner gewonnen werden. In diesem Jahr wird Clemens Meyer zu den AbiturientInnen sprechen. Im Jahr 2008 erhielt er den Preis der Leipziger Buchmesse, 2015 hatte er die Frankfurter Poetik-Dozentur inne.
