Le rime di Michelangelo Buonarroti furono pubblicate solamente nel 1632 a cura del nipote. Le prime prove letterarie risalgono al 1502 e mostrano una precisa dipendenza stilistica da Dante e da Petrarca. Successivamente al 1534 la produzione poetica di Michelangelo divenne più intensa e con maggiore rigore formale, soprattutto nelle rime dedicate a Tommaso Cavalieri e Vittoria Colonna . Nelle rime ulteriormente successive all’anno 1547 Michelangelo dimostra una maggiore essenzialità, con una totale fusione di mondo interiore ed espressione, creando una poesia carica di ansia e tormento religioso.
