Né Wallace né l'editore avrebbero potuto immaginare un successo tanto fulminante: il libro andò a ruba, dando avvio all'incredibile carriera di Wallace, autore di oltre cento romanzi e uno degli scrittori più venduti nella storia dell'editoria. I "quattro giusti" in realtà sono solo tre, integrati in questa loro prima avventura da un "tecnico" reclutato tra la malavita spagnola per portare a termine l'impresa di uccidere di Sir Philip Ramon, ministro degli Esteri di Sua Maestà Britannica, se questi si ostinerà a fare approvare una legge che consenta l'estradizione degli stranieri rifugiatisi in Inghilterra per motivi politici. I "Giusti" non sono nuovi a questo tipo di interventi: convinti che la giustizia si muova troppo lentamente e fra troppi compromessi, i tre, gentiluomini di diverse nazionalità, viaggiano per il mondo per por fine a loro modo a ingiustizie pubbliche e private. Il successo strepitoso de "I quattro giusti" non è stato un caso: già in questo primo romanzo si dispiegano completamente tutte le caratteristiche di Edgar Wallace. In primo luogo l'intelligenza e l'ironia che fanno dello scrittore inglese un acuto osservatore della società del suo tempo. E naturalmente, la costruzione e l'intreccio della trama, perfetti e fantasiosi come si conviene a un maestro del thriller.

Cominciò a lavorare giovanissimo, a diciott’anni si arruolò nell’esercito ma nel 1899 riuscì a farsi congedare. Fu corrispondente di guerra per diversi giornali. Ottenne il suo primo successo come scrittore con I quattro giusti, nel 1905. Da allora scrisse, in ventisette anni, circa 150 opere narrative e teatrali di successo. Tradotto in moltissime lingue, ha influenzato la letteratura gialla mondiale ed è considerato il maestro del romanzo poliziesco. È morto nel 1932.
