La sua prolifica produzione supera i cento titoli, contraddistinta da una prospettiva critica che rifuggiva le correnti letterarie predominanti come il realismo sociale o il surrealismo. Lo stile unico di Sena, caratterizzato da precisione metonimica, densità metaforica e l'uso sofisticato di registri affini alla prosa, lo distinse dai movimenti contemporanei. Sebbene si sia sentito sottovalutato nella sua patria, la sua opera innovativa ed eccellente è oggi ampiamente riconosciuta per la sua unicità e il suo impatto duraturo.

      This astonishingly erotic and ironic novel is set in vaguely medieval times, but the tone is starkly modern. A young gentleman is travelling on horseback, and stops by a river to rest and bathe. As he is lying there naked after bathing, three maidens appear and, trying to avert their gaze from the young man's many charms, they tell him the story of their recently widowed mistress, who is dying of grief. She can only be saved by a man who fulfils three conditions: he must be the son of a king, a great physician, and a virgin. Since he more or less fulfils these conditions, the young man duly goes to the castle where he saves the queen, who immediately falls in love with her saviour. But are the maidens, the queen or the prodigious physician what they seem? In this novel, nothing is certain and nothing is ever entirely over.

      „Die Großkapitäne“ erzählt von einem jungen Rekruten während des spanischen Bürgerkriegs, einem Selbstmord in Porto und einem sprechenden Fabelwesen aus der Kindheit. Die Geschichten beleuchten die Macho-Kultur in Diktaturzeiten und stellen die Schwäche des Einzelnen dagegen. Geschrieben im Exil in Brasilien, erschienen erst nach der Nelkenrevolution.

      Jorge de Sena, 1919 in Lissabon geboren, war Lyriker, Romancier, Essayist und Übersetzer. Sein erstes Gedicht wurde 1938 veröffentlicht. Ausgebildet als Ingenieur an der Universität Porto und lange im Straßenbauwesen tätig, emigrierte er 1959 aus Salazars Portugal nach Brasilien, wo er als Literaturwissenschaftler promovierte. Nach dem Militärputsch in Brasilien übersiedelte er 1965 in die USA und unterrichtete an den Universitäten von Wisconsin und Kalifornien portugiesische und spanische Literatur. Er starb 1978 in Santa Barbara. Feuerzeichen, sein einziger Roman, zwischen 1964 und 1970 geschrieben, konnte erst nach seinem Tod in Portugal erscheinen. Frank Heibert, geboren 1960 in Essen, lebt in Berlin. Er übersetzt aus dem Englischen, Französischen, Italienischen und Portugiesischen. Zu den von ihm übersetzten Autoren gehören Amos Oz, Don DeLillo, Richard Ford und Yasmina Reza.
