1934 als Kind einer jüdischen Familie in Krakau geboren, verläuft Anetas Kindheit anders, als eine Kindheit aussehen sollte: Nachdem der Vater bereits vor den Nazis ins Ausland geflohen ist und die Mutter sich falsche Papiere besorgen musste, sind auch die 5-jährige Aneta und ihr kleiner Bruder in der Stadt nicht mehr sicher. Ihr katholisches Kindermädchen Niania nimmt sie mit in ihr Heimatdorf aufs Land und gibt sie für ihre beiden Kinder aus. Als die Wahrheit herauszukommen droht, können sie auch dort nicht länger bleiben. Aneta und ihr Bruder verbergen sich erst im Krakauer Ghetto, dann findet Niania für die Kinder und sich Unterschlupf in einem Kloster, wo sie für eine Weile in Sicherheit sind. Doch jemand muss die untergetauchten Juden verraten haben, denn das Kloster wird von den Nazis gestürmt, die beiden Kinder werden erst ins Gefängnis, dann in das Lager Plaszów gebracht.
