With the vast number of hepatitis patients and asymptomatic carriers in China, the control and eradication of the disease has become a crucial public health task. This volume presents material regarding the etiology, pathology, clinical features, epidemiology and control of viral hepatitis that have emerged in response to this challenge. Several chapters detail basic studies by leading Chinese investigators on hepatitis B virus, cloning and expression of viral strains, viral replication in vivo and in vitro, immune responses against HBV, liver cancer and HBV, and duck HBV as an animal model. Clinical studies on viral hepatitis and infantile hepatitis as well as treatments integrating modern and traditional methods are reported in further chapters. In addition, epidemiology and preventive strategies for hepatitis A, B and E are discussed, with emphasis on vaccination and disinfection.
