Europe's itinerant players and the advent of German language theatre in Reval, Estonia

Maggiori informazioni sul libro

This study explores 17th-century documents related to itinerant European actors and puppeteers who traveled to eastern German cultural outposts on the Baltic, particularly Reval/Tallinn, Estonia. It discusses their petitions, heritage, routes, and repertory, targeting Germanists, European theatre historians, Baltic German scholars, theatre artistic directors, and English-only readers. For the first time, archival material is presented, including photographs and transcriptions of German petitions from Reval's Archives. The book includes maps, comparative data about the players, and images of historical buildings in Reval. It features German transcriptions and English translations of manuscripts, enhancing the documentary history of the traveling stage. The repertory discussion highlights a rare early 18th-century playbill from the troupe Die Hochteutschen Comoedianten, which performed in Mitau, Reval, Dorpat, Riga, and Stockholm. The cultural history of Reval during the Swedish era is examined, providing insight into the itinerant players' theatre and repertory tradition. Source materials in German and other languages, along with a bibliography on Baltic German history and German theatre in Europe, support further research on this overlooked topic. An essay by Kyra Robert in Appendix I directs readers to sources for studies in reception history, and comprehensive indices conclude the volume.
