Second printing of first edition. Winner of the 1995 International Premio Felice Feiciano for 1993-1994 and with a wrap-around label announcing this fact surrounding dust jacket. An excellent and beautifully illustrated study of the garden of the Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt, which was the first to contain all the shrubs and flowering plants known at that time, including imports from the Orient and Americas. In 1613, the Prince-Bishop commissioned botanist and apothecary Basilius Besler to create a monumental picture book recording all the species in his garden. The author of this volume records the history of this remarkable publishing enterprise.
