The hypercoagulable states are a group of inherited and acquired disorders which lead to a propensity for thrombosis. It is now recognized that there are a number of specific genetic abnormalities, including specific mutations in antithrombotic genes, which cause inherited hypercoagulable states, also termed thrombophilias.
