The National Research Laboratory GKSS, part of the Hermann von Helmholtz-Association of German Research Centres, is located in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and focuses on environmental research. Its primary interests include regional climatology, climate dynamics, interdecadal variations in the Baltic and North Sea, and the transport of heavy metals, nutrients, and other materials from river catchments to coastal zones. The research aims to understand environmental changes due to both natural dynamics and human activities. To disseminate research findings and foster discussions among senior scientists and emerging scholars worldwide, the Institutes of Hydrophysics and Atmospheric Physics at GKSS established the GKSS School of Environmental Research. This initiative recognizes the societal implications of environmental issues, emphasizing that discussions on environmental change must include a social component. This approach is evident in the inclusion of social scientists in the lecture series. Senior scientists from Europe and North America are invited to lecture "students" from diverse global backgrounds, promoting a comprehensive understanding of environmental challenges.
