Diplomatic missions abroad have a special status. Through their architecture, too, they are regarded as an ambassador of the country they represent. Essays by well known authors and an annotated catalogue section, illustrated with sketches, contemporary and current photos, plus architectural models, are brought together in this book to trace the often difficult search for a way of finding appropriate architectural expression for German embassies over the last 50 years. The embassy buildings designed by Eiermann, Scharoun and Ungers typify the themes which dominated architectural discussion in Germany at the time. The book also examines the change in the function of diplomatic missions in an increasingly technological world. World expositions have always been a showcase for nations and new technology. The historical development of this type of building abroad is traced right through to the exhibition pavilion at Expo in Hanover. A wide range of government-sponsored projects abroad is presented, but special attention is paid to the cultural facilities built in Italy.
