Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, there has been a call for academic contributions to research on national and international security. The National Science Foundation has emphasized the need for mid- to long-term research in information technologies, organizational studies, and security-related public policy. Similar to the challenges faced in medical and biological research, law enforcement and intelligence communities are grappling with information overload while also having opportunities for innovation. This necessitates the development of “intelligence and security informatics,” which focuses on advanced information technologies, systems, algorithms, and databases for national security applications through an integrated approach. Active research in this field aims to enhance knowledge discovery, improve information sharing, and foster collaboration among law enforcement, academics, and various governmental and industry stakeholders. Existing computer and information science techniques must be reexamined and adapted for national security needs. Insights from this domain could lead to significant advancements in data mining, visualization, knowledge management, and information security techniques and systems.
