Menodotus of Nicomedia (II AD) is regarded as a significant figure in the Greek Empirical school and, according to ancient sources, a key proponent of Skepticism and a precursor to modern experimental science. This book presents the first scientific monograph focused solely on an empirical physician, accompanied by a collection of fragments in a "running commentary" format. It aims to establish a more accurate historical context for Menodotus and the evolution of Greek empirical medicine, challenging the conventional narrative. The work addresses several critical issues, including the sources primarily associated with the renowned physician Galen and their reliability; Menodotus's misunderstood role as a source for Galen's depiction of Empiricism; and the interplay between reason and experience within the empirical framework. It also explores Menodotus's connections to earlier thinkers in the school and the broader post-Aristotelian medical and philosophical landscape, from Diocles of Carystus to Heraclides of Tarentum and the Epicureanism of Philodemus. The Introduction examines the significance of Greek Empiricism in the history of science. Additionally, the book features a comprehensive bibliography, five indexes, and an Epilegomenon discussing the authenticity of certain Galenic works related to Empiricism.
