The 8th ERCIM Workshop “User Interfaces for All” took place in Vienna, Austria, on 28–29 June 2004, following seven earlier workshops held across Europe from 1995 to 2002. This workshop focused on the proactive realization of the “signforall” principle in human-computer interaction (HCI), aiming to develop user interfaces for interactive applications and e-services that ensure universal access and usability for all users. Continuing the tradition of its predecessors, the 2004 event sought to consolidate recent advancements and foster discussions about the state of the art in “User Interfaces for All,” emphasizing its expanding applications in the emerging Information Society. The theme centered on “User-Centered Interaction Paradigms for Universal Access in the Information Society.” This focus on user-centered universal access arises from the growing influence of new technologies and the diverse dimensions intrinsic to the Information Society. These dimensions highlight the wide range of user characteristics, the evolving nature of human activities, various contexts of use, and the increasing availability and diversification of information, knowledge sources, and e-services, alongside the proliferation of technological platforms.
