The 4th of July 1954 is a pivotal moment in German history, marked by West Germany's 3:2 victory over Hungary in the FIFA World Cup, their first win. Helmut Rahn's decisive goal revitalized a nation still recovering from the devastation of World War II, fostering a sentiment of national pride encapsulated in the phrase "we are somebody again." This victory became known as the 'Miracle of Bern.' In 2003, German director Sönke Wortmann, in collaboration with the German Football Association (DFB), created a feature film to reconstruct this historic event. Despite concerns that he might tarnish the myth surrounding it, Wortmann aimed to preserve the legend for younger generations unfamiliar with the event. The film attracted over three million viewers, making it one of Europe’s most successful films of the year, despite some criticism labeling it the 'most American German film of all time.' Critics argued that Wortmann focused on the mythical aspects of West Germany's triumph, a departure from typical German cinema but reminiscent of classic American sports films from the 1980s. This study will analyze the film in comparison to notable U.S. sports movies such as Field of Dreams, The Natural, and Hoosiers, exploring why Wortmann might have drawn inspiration from an American model for such a distinctly German subject.
