The project "Hacking the City," part of the "European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010," involved collaboration among twenty museums in a series of exhibitions titled "Mapping the Region." Museum Folkwang presented an experimental initiative that diverged from traditional museum activities, featuring over thirteen public space projects, a "Base-Station" in the museum, and a dedicated website. This book documents various themes explored, including "Municipal surveillance as a subject of artistic fieldwork," "Reverse and flip sides," "Perfect Throws," "The Power of Gifts," and more. The concept of "cultural hacking" involves reprogramming and alienating existing cultural codes through appropriation, transcription, manipulation, and revaluation, altering everyday situations and routines. This approach has led to a diverse array of subversive strategies across all art forms, impacting various demographics. "Cultural hacks" are spontaneous actions by artists that cannot be pre-announced, focusing on clandestine access to public spaces and interventions in non-artistic systems. The project aimed to connect contemporary art themes by broadening the discourse on public art and addressing the culture of (re-)appropriation in political, economic, and cultural contexts. It raises the question of art's effectiveness when it does not overtly identify as art.
