‘Figures and Fictions’ showcases the work of 17 South African photographers active between 2000 and 2010, capturing the shift from post-democratic euphoria. As traditional categories of ‘black and white’ evolve, the vision of a post-racial ‘rainbow nation’ remains complex and challenging. This collection features both established figures and emerging talents, reflecting a dynamic political landscape. Notable contributors include David Goldblatt and Santu Mofokeng, alongside mid-career artists like Guy Tillim and Jodi Bieber, as well as newcomers such as Zanele Muholi and Kudzanai Chiurai. The exhibition and accompanying book highlight the innovative and thought-provoking nature of contemporary South African photography. Tamar Garb, a prominent art historian and head of the History of Art department at University College London, has extensively explored themes of portraiture, race, and representation in her work. Her key publications include studies on modernity and women's portraits in 19th-century France. Garb has also curated significant exhibitions, including contemporary South African art at the Haunch of Venison Gallery and a major Gauguin exhibition at Tate Modern. Through this project, the rich tapestry of South African photography is presented, offering insights into identity and societal change.
