The sheer computing power of modern information technology is transforming research across various disciplines, including humanities and cultural studies. In recent decades, there has been a significant shift in attitudes toward computers, which are now essential tools rather than mere typewriters. This volume explores the diverse computing applications available to humanities researchers, such as virtual ‘co-laboratories’ for disseminating scholarly information, data retrieval, and modeling complex processes related to our natural and cultural heritage. A key focus is the versatility of computers in presenting images and graphics, enhancing the analysis of data sets and archaeological reconstructions. The papers are organized into three main categories: mathematical and computational methods, developments in information systems, and ongoing efforts to document, restore, and present cultural monuments, including the temples of Pompeii and the Angkorian Banteay Chhmar temples in Cambodia. Originally presented at a research workshop in Heidelberg, Germany, these contributions reflect the evolving identity of computational humanities as a distinct interdisciplinary field and showcase the diverse perspectives within this dynamic research area.
