The working group „Kunst im öffentlichen Raum der Stadt Zürich“ [KiöR] organized the symposium „Ruhestörung – Über die Wirkung zeitgenössischer Kunst im öffentlichen Raum“ on November 7, 2009. Artists Jan Morgenthaler, Thomas Hirschhorn, Tobias Rehberger, and the „! Mediengruppe Bitnik“ showcased their interventions in public spaces. City policy representatives Ruth Genner, Brigit Wehrli, Bettina Burkhardt, and Regula Lüscher contributed to the discussions. Daniel Baumann and Eva Riedi shared insights from their experiences with curatorial and organizational aspects of art projects in public spaces, while Bazon Brock provided a critical review of the historical evolution of public art. Chaired by Dorothea Strauss and KiöR's new president Christoph Doswald, the event explored various artistic interventions—both proposed and realized. This volume documents these contributions and the discussions, presenting a compendium of questions essential for contemplating art in public spaces. It serves as a valuable resource for artists, curators, private sponsors, city officials, and art-interested citizens. Published in collaboration with the City of Zurich, this book transcends mere documentation, offering guidance for engaging with contemporary public art.
