Maggiori informazioni sul libro

Subsurface flow problems are inherently multiscale in space and time due to the variability of material properties and the coupling of various physical processes, including advection, diffusion, reaction, and phase exchange. Current subsurface flow models require significant advancement, as they struggle to adequately describe nonequilibrium effects, entrapped air, anomalous dispersion, and hysteresis. Additionally, model parameters are often difficult to access and uncertain. Computational challenges include managing strong heterogeneities and anisotropies, efficiently solving transport-reaction problems involving multiple species, addressing multiphase-multicomponent flows, and integrating subsurface models with surface flow models governed by shallow water or Stokes equations. In terms of energy and environmental concerns, the modeling and simulation of radioactive waste management and underground CO2 sequestration have garnered considerable interest, presenting unique challenges from modeling clay materials to handling large-scale models using high-performance computing. This work unites key numerical mathematicians focused on the analysis and computation of multiscale subsurface flow with practitioners from engineering and industry interested in applying these fundamental issues.
