ECO-WISE represents ecologically conscious practices and highlights the growing international trend toward "green" initiatives. Specifically, it refers to ecologically oriented work-integration social enterprises, which are not-for-profit organizations aimed at integrating the long-term unemployed into society through jobs in ecological businesses. In recent years, these enterprises have emerged as a strategic resource for enhancing the environmental, social, and economic foundations of society. They exemplify best practices aligned with the global sustainable development strategy. However, their experiences in balancing economic, social, and environmental objectives remain underexplored. This book aims to provide an overview of the concepts, performances, and impacts of ECO-WISE and similar social enterprises that prioritize environmental goals alongside socio-economic ones. A diverse group of international experts contributed to this compilation, sharing insights from their national and cultural contexts, as well as various theoretical and methodological approaches. This collection of articles serves as one of the first cohesive sets illustrating the realm of ECO-WISE and related organizations, with the intention of sparking further discourse on the experiences and potential of social enterprises as sustainable actors.
