Algebraic geodesy and geoinformatics

Maggiori informazioni sul libro

While teaching ‘Introduction to Geodesy I and II’ at Stuttgart University, we identified a significant gap in students' skills, particularly in algebra and computer algebra, which are essential for various geodesy and geoinformatics topics. This observation inspired us to create a resource that consolidates fundamental concepts of abstract algebra, which are crucial for addressing algebraic problems. The book presents and tests algebraic computational algorithms designed to solve nonlinear systems of equations, providing exact solutions for a range of challenges. Although the primary focus is on geodesy and geoinformatics, the concepts and techniques discussed are relevant across other fields that encounter algebraic computational issues. For instance, engineering applications like network densification and robotics utilize resection and intersection techniques that necessitate algebraic solutions. The resolution of nonlinear systems of equations is vital in various geosciences, including geodesy, geoinformatics, and geophysics, as well as in robotics. These equations form the foundation for operations such as ranging, resection, and intersection. Examples include the three-dimensional resection problem, which is crucial for determining the positions and orientations of sensors like cameras, theodolites, robots, and scanners.
