In an era marked by heightened diplomatic relations and a renewed fascination with classical antiquity, ambassadors were expected to deliver elaborate Latin speeches upon their arrival. Scholars debate whether these orations were merely ceremonial or held significant relevance for the missions and the broader political and intellectual landscape. This work revisits this genre by presenting three speeches from ambassadors of the Republic of Venice, directed at representatives from territories north of the Alps, specifically the Holy Roman Empire and France. The text is a modern, critical edition based on a thorough collation of all available manuscripts and printed materials. It emphasizes the initial versions believed to have been delivered. Each speech is accompanied by separate introductions that provide context, detailing the historical background, specific mission circumstances, and the authors' educational backgrounds and stylistic preferences. The commentary aims to enhance the study of the original speeches, offering a rich collection of parallels from classical sources, including biblical and patristic texts, along with historical details and references to contemporary literature to aid comprehension.
