Changes in the European drug landscape and social drug research are rapidly evolving, largely driven by technological advancements. Drug users, dealers, and researchers increasingly utilize electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, and the Internet. This shift means researchers no longer need to conduct ‘real life’ observations or interviews in person. However, it is essential to remember that drug use often occurs in social settings. The challenge for social drug research lies in balancing street and screen methodologies. Contributions from various researchers in this volume highlight the continued importance of classic ethnographic methods and the relevance of twentieth-century sociological concepts in understanding contemporary drug phenomena. The authors examine the implications of screen-based research for policymakers and practitioners in law enforcement, prevention, harm reduction, and treatment. Collectively, the chapters provide a comprehensive overview of the diversity in today’s drug use and distribution landscape. Marije Wouters serves as an Assistant Professor at the Bonger Institute of Criminology, University of Amsterdam, while Jane Fountain is a research consultant and Emeritus Professor at the University of Central Lancashire.
