Arp Schnitger and his work

Documentation of the Organs and Façades built by Arp Schnitger in Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Brazil

Maggiori informazioni sul libro

This volume gathers all surviving organs and organ façades from the workshop of Arp Schnitger for the first time. These instruments are located in North Germany, the northern Provinces of the Netherlands, as well as Portugal and Brazil. Arp Schnitger (1648–1719) was the most prolific organ builder of his time, with a vast geographical reach extending from Moscow to England and south to Portugal. His influence even reached the Western Hemisphere when an organ originally built for Lisbon was transferred to the Cathedral in Mariana, Brazil, in 1752. Of the over 160 original Schnitger organs, forty-six organ façades remain, showcasing the organ culture of northern Europe during the Baroque Era. Around 1700, Schnitger was a dominant figure in European organ culture, a status that has been revived in contemporary times. His surviving instruments are frequently copied and featured in recordings worldwide, making them a vital part of global organ culture. The authors, recognized experts on the Schnitger style, provide a comprehensive overview of the art and design of his organs. The publishers, two societies from North Germany and the northern Netherlands, aim to promote and communicate the Art of the Organ broadly.
