Palestinians often project a unified national identity to counter Israeli efforts to create divisions among them. However, this seemingly cohesive image conceals deep internal tensions and conflicts. Utilizing biographical research and figurational sociology, the articles in this volume analyze the Middle East conflict beyond the simplistic dichotomy of “Israelis” versus “Palestinians.” Through case studies from five urban areas in Palestine and Israel—Bethlehem, Ramallah, East Jerusalem, Haifa, and Jaffa—the authors examine the significance of belonging, collective self-images, and social differentiation within Palestinian communities. Each case study is contextualized within its specific social and socio-political environment, incorporating family histories and life narratives. The analysis emphasizes the diverse perspectives of Palestinians, highlighting distinctions among various religious, socio-economic, political, and generational groups, such as Christians versus Muslims and long-time residents versus refugees.
