This book serves two main purposes. Firstly, it provides an informed assessment of British media discourse regarding 'Germany' and 'the Germans' following unification, focusing on the 1990s. While other works have explored controversial Anglo-German relations from historical and political angles, this volume analyzes media discourse and its agenda setters, utilizing a diverse range of sources from British press, radio, and television that are often less accessible. Secondly, it highlights the media's power to shape and distort national images, emphasizing the importance for language educators to address this influence. Several contributions illustrate how language teaching can benefit from an intercultural approach to 'Landeskunde' (German Area Studies). By equipping learners to access and analyze cultural practices and meanings, educators can foster a critical and constructive media engagement. This approach ultimately helps students develop a shared sense of identity with their European neighbors.
