The relationship between the individual and the community has changed in modern societies. Individuals have greater leeway and more options. Many segments of society are less cohesive than they once were. Yet self-determination and community orientation are not mutually exclusive. It is only within a community that the individual can achieve full self-realization. The ability of individuals to live together and help one another is founded on a sense of civic-mindedness. And if civic-mindedness is to be fostered amid an environment of growing self-determination, new places must be found where individuals can learn.
