Maggiori informazioni sul libro

This is the first volume of a planned trilogy exploring the many fascinating styles of station to be found on the world-famous London Underground network. It covers all 103 stations on the Underground’s four ‘subsurface’ lines – the Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan and District Lines. Among these are the oldest underground stations in the world dating from 1863 when steam locomotives started pulling trains through the tunnels beneath central London and some of the Underground’s iconic Modernist-style suburban stations dating from the 1930s. Many stations are listed as ‘Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest’ and many others retain heritage features which have been preserved or replicated during recent refurbishment works. The book starts with a brief description of the ‘subsurface’ network and its development and then takes a ride along each line in turn, illustrating all stations in full colour, from busy central London interchanges to quiet suburban stations, with short captions about each station’s history and design. At the end of the book, the reader will find detailed maps showing the ‘subsurface’ lines in the context of the Greater London rail network. Two future volumes will cover the stations of the ‘tube’ lines.
