Before the coming of the railway reduced its importance as a port, Wigtown prospered as a market town, benefiting from the right to charge dues on all sheep, cattle and wool crossing the River Cree. This collection of pictures reveals a quiet country town with tidy streets lined with inns and shops. There was a darker side to Wigtown's history, however, and two female Covenanters are believed to have been drowned there in 1685. Neighbouring Bladnoch and Kirkinner are included in this book too. Bladnoch was a centre of commerce and industry with its iron foundry, coachbuilders, distillery, creamery and mill, while there are also pictures of the RAF airfield at Baldoon Park, plus the village of Kirkinner and its station.
