Algernon Charles Swinburne, a prominent Victorian poet, gained fame for his intense lyricism and innovative use of meter and imagery, notably in works like "Atalanta in Calydon" and "Poems and Ballads." Despite initial acclaim, his reputation waned over time, partly due to his tumultuous lifestyle marked by excessive drinking and physical ailments. After a near-fatal illness, his friend Theodore Watts-Dunton intervened, leading to a significant but restrictive change in Swinburne's life.
