The Four Hymns exhibit a mystical and meditative quality, akin to the Five Mystical Songs but in a more intimate form. The first hymn, "Lord! come away!", features lively Purcellian recitatives based on a 17th-century Palm Sunday text. "Who is this fair one?" presents a dialogue on divine love for tenor and viola. "Come Love, come Lord" embodies a mystical solitude, while the final "Evening Hymn" showcases contrapuntal mastery over a bell-like ostinato.
