Focusing on the methods of classroom assessment in mathematics, this study highlights the importance of formative assessment beyond traditional quizzes and tests. It explores how middle grades teachers utilize dynamic discourse and instructionally embedded assessments to gauge student understanding and inform their teaching strategies. Through semi-structured interviews, observations, and videotaped lessons, the research identifies two prerequisites and five techniques that enhance teachers' ability to assess student learning effectively.
