L'assassino deve per forza nascondersi tra i viaggiatori, ma nessuno di loro sembra avere un movente. Almeno in apparenza... Pubblicato nel 1934, "Assassinio sull'Orient Express" è da molti considerato il capolavoro di Agatha Christie, ed è sicuramente uno dei gialli più noti e letti in tutto il mondo.

    Durante un ricevimento nell'"eremo" di sir Charles Cartwright, alla presenza di una bella compagnia di amici, si verifica uno strano episodio: uno degli ospiti, un timido e pio pastore protestante, muore improvvisamente. Polizia e medico legale si trovano subito d'accordo nell'indicare, come causa del decesso, un comune infarto, e anche Hercule Poirot, che era presente, inizialmente non sospetta di nulla. Ma quando, poco dopo, un altro degli ospiti muore, in circostanze molto simili, il celebre investigatore dovrà ricredersi e dare avvio a un'indagine destinata a portare risultati clamorosi. Scritto nel 1934, "Tragedia in tre atti", è un romanzo poliziesco decisamente brillante, dalla struttura molto cinematografica.

Quattro affascinanti storie poliziesche, pubblicate per la prima volta nel 1937, ognuna delle quali, per la complessità dell’intreccio e la ricchezza psicologica dei personaggi, ha il respiri di un romanzo. In "Delitto nei Mews" il detective è chiamato in causa dal suo vecchio amico, l’ispettore Japp di Scotland Yard, per scoprire se la signora Allen è stata uccisa o si è suicidata. Nel "Furto incredibile" l’investigatore è, insolitamente, alle prese con la sparizione di documenti militari top Secret. "Lo specchio del morto" ci riporta in un ambiente classico delle storie di Poirot: un invito in una casa di campagna con l’ospite che si trasforma in vittima. Scritto nel 1933, La parola alla difesa è uno dei romanzi più profondi e incisivi della Christie e uno dei pochi ambientati in un tribunale. In esso l'autrice, oltre alla sua notoria competenza in fatto di veleni, ha utilizzato molti più diversivi di quanto accade abitualmente in questo genere di libri.

Jen Poirot postupuje v případu a odhaluje falešné existence, falešné city i pokřivené vztahy. Pomůže dopadnout vraha – i ochránit náhodnou spolucestující, sympatickou, chytrou a vnímavou Katherine, jež zažije svou vlastní detektivku – a také první milostné vzplanutí. Tučné dědictví po tetičce Emily – to je zápletka románu Němý svědek z roku 1937. Příbuzní už se nemohou dočkat peněz, ale tetička jako na potvoru ne a ne umřít. Nakonec se do toho vloží pes Bob a nastraží na milou Emily past v podobě míčku zapomenutého na schodech. Anebo ho tam nenechal Bob? A byl to vůbec míček? Ale vždyť je to jedno, teta nakonec stejně zemřela přirozenou smrtí. Nebo ne? A tak přijíždí Hercule Poirot, aby zjistil pravdu.

    Slavný belgický detektiv se opět ujímá tří zapeklitých případů v románech Schůzka se smrtí, Temný cypřiš a Zlo pod sluncem. V Schůzce se smrtí se na pozadí údolí Petry odehrává konflikt mezi starou despotickou ženou a jejími dětmi, které se vzájemně nenávidí. Tragická smrt matky vyvolává otázky: byla to nehoda, nebo vražda? Její potomci měli dostatek motivů, a ani náhodní spolucestující nejsou bez podezření. Hercule Poirot musí do čtyřiadvaceti hodin rozluštit záhadu. Detektivka Temný cypřiš začíná nečekanou smrtí bohaté paní Welmanové. Dědička Elinor vypadá jako jasná volba, ale otázky o jejích úmyslech se objevují. Další smrt posiluje podezření, a Elinor je obviněna z vraždy. Pouze Poirot nevěří v její vinu a volí neobvyklou metodu, kdy se zaměřuje na lež místo pravdy. Zlo pod sluncem se odehrává na klidném ostrově, kde se setkávají letní rekreanti. Pozornost přitahuje Hercule Poirot, který se snaží přesvědčit ostatní, že přišel jen odpočívat. V detektívke Poirotove Vianoce (1938) sa svojrázny Belgičan predstaví vo vrcholnej forme – jeho geniálny mozog ešte nikdy nefungoval lepšie. Vidiecke sídlo Gorston Hall sa na Štedrý večer stane dejiskom brutálnej vraždy jeho bohatého majiteľa a miestna polícia sa pri vyšetrovaní spolieha na povestné malé sivé bunky Hercula Poirota. A napokon v románe Opona: Poirotov posledný prípad (1975) nás Agatha Christie opäť zavedie do Styles Courtu, kde sa pred rokmi začala úspešná kariéra legendárneho detektíva.
