Quando sentiamo parlare dell'Islam, lo associamo quasi automaticamente con il mondo di lingua araba, l'Arabia Saudita, l'Egitto, il Marocco, la Siria o paesi non arabi come la Turchia, l'Afghanistan o il Paki-stan. I paesi del sud-est asiatico invece vengono in mente a pochi. Ed è proprio nel sud-est asiatico che vive la più ampia popolazione musulmana del mon-do. Soprattutto in Indonesia e Malesia, ma anche in Cambogia, Thailandia o nelle Filippine. Una caratte-ristica saliente della storia dell'Islam nel sud-est asiatico è che la religione islamica in queste regioni si è diffusa e sviluppata pacificamente e fino ad oggi in molti luoghi vive in armonia con le altre religioni e con tradizioni e culture diverse. I saggi e gli articoli di questo libro focalizzano sull’In-donesia, ma propongono anche fatti interessanti sui musulmani in Malesia e Cambogia e sui musulmani indonesiani in Germania. I saggi mostrano aspetti della vita musulmana nel sud-est asiatico e raccon-tano storie che sorprenderanno il pubblico che le legge. Una fattoria biologica basata sulla filosofia islamica, monete islamiche in oro e argento usate nei mercati, collegi islamici, le peculiarità del Rama-dan in Indonesia, le celebrazioni in occasione della data di nascita del profeta Maometto e una moschea indonesiana a Berlino sono solo alcuni esempi della diversità colorata trattata nei capitoli di questo libro.

Based on extensive ethnographic research, Religioscapes in Muslim Indonesia examines three major Islamic practices found in Indonesia through exemplary case studies. It considers the historical and contemporary contexts which frame these practices, it traces their networks and connections and the ways people relate to them in their daily lives. The first case study provides a deep historical grounding in the mystic Islam found in Yogyakarta. The second case study explores the mixture of local and Hadhrami influences in the Islamic practice of South Sumatra, while the third case study examines an ‘imported’ form of reform Islam in an area of recent settlement. The analysis shows that Islam in Indonesia is pluriform, and that it is influenced by translocal transfers of ideas, practices, texts as well as embedment in local cultural contexts. Islam’s entanglement as a global religion with local sets of practices can be opened up by the concept of the religioscape. The analysis further illustrates that different variants of local Islam, as opposed to the idea of a universal Islam, have not lost their significance in Indonesia. This means that the plural and moderate Islam prevalent in Indonesia is not on the decline, and that rather than Islamization, a piousization can be observed to be taking place.

Indonesian Contemporary Art is an important feature of Indonesian identity and culture. Both well known and young unknown artists and their activities in the local and national art scene form a great part of contemporary art in Indonesia. The book focuses on the art and culture metropolis Yogyakarta where art and culture belong to everyday life.
