"Obabakoak" è un nome composto dal toponimo Obaba e dal suffisso koak, che in lingua basca sta a indicare un'appartenenza. Letteralmente "Obabakoak" significa le cose, le vicende, le "Storie di Obaba", luogo immaginario, piccolo villaggio sperduto fra i monti, isolato e dimenticato dal resto del mondo. Sinonimo di solitudine, metafora dei Paesi Baschi. Obaba funge da mitico fondale dei racconti del libro, racconti scritti fra memoria e gioco combinatorio, in una cornice inflessibile che a poco a poco si insinua nel testo per svelarne i meccanismi - gli artifizi del novellare - per divenire un nuovo, originale materiale narrativo che penetra e informa i racconti e che, infine, travolgerà il narratore, vittima designata delle sue stesse trame.Sarà durante la ricerca dell'ultima parola, della parola conclusiva cui spetta dare un senso, un significato a tutta un'opera, che Bernardo Atxaga evocherà con ironia e distacco i problemi della scrittura, svelerà la tecnica del plagio e ne tesserà l'elogio, non foss'altro perché - come farà dire a uno dei suoi personaggi: "Tutti i bei racconti sono già stati scritti, e se non sono stati scritti, vuol dire che non erano belli". E in un continuo crescendo, fra il recupero di antiche favole infantili, invenzioni geniali e colpi di scena, renderà il lettore partecipe del suo fare narrativo, dei suoi giochi, per condurlo, di sorpresa in sorpresa - di novella in novella - sino alla novella-sorpresa finale.
