Groucho Marx führte ein unkonventionelles Leben und verfasste gleich zwei Autobiografien, die in diesem Band erstmals zusammengefasst sind. Trotz seiner Eskapaden zeigt er sich selbstkritisch und hat eine klare Haltung: „Ich möchte keinem Club angehören, der mich als Mitglied akzeptiert“ und „Ich habe eiserne Prinzipien – und wenn sie Ihnen nicht gefallen, habe ich auch noch andere.“ Zudem äußert er tiefgründige Gedanken zur Geschlechterfrage: „Ein Mann ist so alt wie die Frau, die er fühlt.“ In Bezug auf Frauen war Groucho dreimal verheiratet und dreimal geschieden, was ihn zu dem Schluss brachte: „Die Ehe ist eine wunderbare Institution, aber wer möchte schon in einer Institution leben?“
