Gillian Cormier-Brandenburg, a virginal and narcoleptic Ph.D. student at Harvard Divinity School, faces a crisis when her fellowship is revoked. Forced to find new income and dissertation subjects, she takes a job at Responsibility House, a halfway house for recovering addicts. There, she encounters a diverse group of tenants, including the motorcycle-obsessed Janet and impulsive Florine, who challenge her views and inspire her to reconsider her own aspirations and beliefs.
